Care labels explained

The five little symbols on every label tell you how to wash, bleach, dry, iron and dry clean. Here is what they mean.

01The five symbols

Almost every care label uses the same five shapes. A cross through any of them means do not do this.

  • Wash tub: washing
  • Triangle: bleaching
  • Square: drying
  • Iron: ironing
  • Circle: professional cleaning, such as dry cleaning

02Wash tub

  • A number inside is the highest water temperature in °C, for example 30 or 40
  • Dots instead of a number mean the same thing: one dot is cool, more dots are warmer
  • One line under the tub means a gentler cycle; two lines mean very gentle
  • A hand in the tub means hand wash only

03Triangle

  • Empty triangle: any bleach is fine
  • Triangle with two diagonal lines: only non-chlorine (oxygen) bleach
  • Crossed-out triangle: no bleach

04Square

  • Square with a circle inside: tumble dryer is fine; dots show the heat, one dot low, two dots normal
  • Square with a curved line at the top: line dry
  • Square with vertical lines: hang to dry; three lines means drip dry without wringing
  • Square with one horizontal line: dry flat, which keeps knits in shape

05Iron

  • One dot: low heat, for delicate fabrics
  • Two dots: medium heat, for wool and polyester
  • Three dots: high heat, for cotton and linen
  • Crossed-out iron: do not iron; steam may also be unsafe

06Circle

  • A letter inside tells the dry cleaner which method to use, such as P or F
  • A W inside means professional wet cleaning
  • A crossed-out circle means do not dry clean

07How we use them

We clean each item the way its label says. If a label is missing or worn, tell us what the item is when you book.
