Summer sweat stains and how to stop them

Yellow underarm marks and stale smells are common in a Dubai summer. Here is how to treat them, and how to stop them coming back.

01Why the marks turn yellow

The yellow is not just sweat. It is sweat mixed with the aluminium in many antiperspirants, plus body oils, baked in over time. Heat makes it set faster, which is why white shirts and kanduras suffer most in summer.

02Treat it early

  • Wash sweaty clothes soon; do not leave them in a hot laundry basket for days
  • Rub a little liquid detergent into the underarm area before washing
  • For older marks, soak in cool water with an oxygen-based stain remover, following its instructions
  • Avoid hot water and the dryer until the mark is gone; heat sets it in

03Gym kit and smells

Sports fabrics hold on to smells. Wash them inside out, use less fabric softener, which can trap odour, and let them air dry. Never leave damp kit in a gym bag in a hot car.

04Stop it coming back

  • Let antiperspirant dry fully before you dress
  • Wear an undershirt under shirts and kanduras on the hottest days
  • Wash white shirts after each wear in summer

05Let us take the shirts

Work shirts can come back pressed: a shirt is AED 9 to press or AED 15 to dry clean, and clothes can go 12-hour express (+50%).
