Dust and sand: keeping curtains and bedding fresh in Dubai

Dubai's dust settles on everything soft in your home. Here is how often to clean what, and how to keep it fresher for longer.

01Why fabrics get dusty so fast

Fine sand and dust come in through windows, balconies, AC vents and on shoes, and soft fabrics hold on to it. After a dusty or sandy day you may notice curtains looking dull, bedding feeling gritty and cushions smelling stale.

02A rough cleaning rhythm

  • Bedsheets and pillowcases: every week
  • Duvet covers: every one to two weeks; the duvet itself a few times a year
  • Pillows: a few times a year, if the label allows washing
  • Curtains and sheers: every few months, more often near the sea or a building site
  • Cushion covers and throws: monthly in dust season

03Simple habits that help

  • Shake or vacuum curtains gently once a week with a brush attachment
  • Keep windows and balcony doors shut on dusty or windy days
  • Change AC filters as recommended so less dust blows round the room
  • Shoes off at the door keeps sand off rugs

04Curtains need care

Many curtains shrink or lose their shape in a home machine, and lined or blackout curtains often need professional cleaning. Check the label, and take measurements before you wash in case they shrink.

05Let us take the big pieces

We clean curtains for AED 20 a square metre and carpets for AED 30, and a king duvet for AED 55. Big pieces take 48 to 72 hours.
