Moving house in Dubai: curtains, carpets and bedding

Moving out of a flat or into a new villa? Curtains, carpets and bedding hold a year of dust and sand. Clean them at the right moment in the move and the new place starts fresh. Here is how to plan it.

01Plan it into the move

  • Book curtains and carpets about a week before moving day; they take 48 hours, longer than clothes
  • Take curtains down the day before the pickup, so the windows are not bare for long
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs first, then roll them with the pile on the inside
  • Pack bedding and curtains in bags labelled by room, so they go back up in the right place

02Moving out

Ask your landlord or agent what they expect at handover; some tenancy agreements mention curtains and carpets. Clean them once the heavy packing is done, so the dust from moving does not settle on them again, and keep the receipt.

03Taking curtains down

  • Take a photo of each window first, so you know which panel goes where
  • Take out the hooks or rings and keep them in a small bag with the curtain
  • Read the care label: blackout linings, sheers and velvet each need their own care
  • Fold the curtains loosely rather than stuffing them into a bag, to avoid deep creases

04Moving in

Curtains left by the last tenant, and new curtains and bedding from the shop, can carry dust, smells and factory finishes. Wash new bedding before the first night, and clean or air out curtains before you hang them in your new home.

05Keep the dust down after the move

New homes and busy moving days bring in a lot of dust and sand. Shake out rugs outside, keep balcony doors closed on windy days, and clean curtains and bedding a little more often in the first weeks.
