School uniforms in Dubai: whites, PE kit and a week that works

Five school days, hot mornings and a PE lesson or two make uniforms some of the hardest-working clothes in the house. Here is how to keep whites white, deal with the usual marks and get through the week without a late-night wash.

01Plan the week

  • Have enough shirts or polos for the week plus one spare, so a missed wash is not a crisis
  • Wash PE kit the day it comes home; damp sports kit left in a bag starts to smell quickly
  • Empty pockets before washing: pens, tissues and crayons can mark a whole load
  • New uniforms often carry factory finishes: wash them before the first day of term

02Keep the whites white

Collars and cuffs pick up sweat and body oil, and in the heat those marks turn yellow if they sit. Rub a little liquid detergent into collars and cuffs before washing, wash whites on their own, and check the care label before using any bleach: many uniforms are a polyester blend that chlorine bleach can yellow.

03The usual marks

  • Mud: let it dry, brush off as much as you can, then wash
  • Grass: work in a little liquid detergent and leave it for a few minutes before washing
  • Food and sauces: scrape off what you can, then rinse from the back with cold water
  • Ink and marker: dab, do not rub, and test any stain remover on a hidden spot first
  • Check before the dryer: heat sets whatever is left

04Name every piece

Jumpers, blazers and PE kit look the same on every child. Iron-on or sewn-in name labels help lost things come back; follow the label maker's instructions so they stay on through the wash.

05Less ironing

Take shirts out of the machine as soon as it finishes and hang them up straight away, and many need little ironing. Iron at the heat the care label allows; polyester blends need a cooler iron than cotton.
